Seminar and Technical Meetings

2007 CASANZ SEMINAR SERIES

 CARBON MANAGEMENT:
A
 Business Imperative

Presenter:    Terry A'Hearn, EPA Victoria
                       Director, Sustainable Development

EPA Victoria has developed a 'carbon neutral' plan for its operations and Terry A'Hearn will share the details and learnings from the process. This initiative was challenging, but worthwhile. EPA Victoria tried to apply the same business decision-making discipline as would be expected from a typical company. Some of the steps were:

  • the measurement of the EPA's carbon footprint using the World Resources Institute/World Business Council for Sustainable Development Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard;
  • to help identify and assess the options, EPA has developed a set of draft Carbon Management Principles
  • assessing reduction and offset options from a financial and environmental perspective;
  • seeking independent verification of our emissions inventory and plan; and
  • looking at innovative ways to make the plan commercially viable.
