Indoor Air Quality in Australia : A Strategy for Action, 2002
This overview sets the scene with: “Indoor air quality is a most significant environmental issue that has not been seriously addressed in this country. Unhealthy indoor air is costing the Australian community an estimated $12 billion a year. Australia is failing its responsibilities of a ‘duty of care’ to protect the community in the environment where we spend most of their time.” The paper identifies and discusses eight reasons of concern about indoor air quality and the significance of indoor pollutants whose levels in outside air are the subject of National Environment Protection Measures – carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter (PM 10), lead, sulphur dioxide and ozone. The paper also discusses other pollutants found indoors - inorganic pollutants, organic pollutants and biological pollutants. It presents six steps that will improve indoor air quality. A table of 21 indoor air pollutants, showing their major sources and suggested priorities for immediate actions are included.
